Gizmodo editor Brian Lam left his phone at a restaurant and was able to retrieve it later because someone turned it in. Even though I’m sure there’s valuable information on his phone, no one felt the urge to sell it for $5,000.
On his Twitter, Lam wrote, “left my phone at lunch, lady turned it in. good thing we were nice, earlier, and gave her the chair she asked for #karma.”
It’s interesting that he brings up karma because his publication is responsible for leaking the Apple iPhone 4. How did they get it? Well, it was apparently lost in a bar and the person who found it didn’t do the logical thing and turn it in, but he sold it to Gizmodo for a few thousands of dollars.
This douchebag was then outed by the police and another Gizmodo editor had his house raided by the police. There’s still an ongoing investigation into whether there was criminal activity involved but a lot of the furor has died down.
It’s clear that the early leak didn’t impact the sales of the Apple iPhone 4, as the device has sold more than 3 million units since its release and the company is still struggling to keep up with demand.
The early look at the Apple iPhone 4 revealed a lot but there were still plenty of surprises. We knew the Retina Display would have increased resolution but no one guessed it would cram so many pixels per inch in.
We also didn’t know that the external stainless steel frame of the Apple iPhone 4 would double as the antenna. Maybe that wasn’t such a great decision after all.

We’ve talked about Multifl0w before, one the first jailbreak apps to give a multitasking UI to the iPhone. At the time, I wasn’t really a fan because I thought that ProSwitcher was a much better application. Things have changed a lot since then. Apple developed their own multitasking feature, and ProSwitcher was left for dead by its developer who recently said he will not update it. Read More

Permalink | Email this | CommentsIt looks like you’ve lost a mobile music option, as the Grooveshark app for the Apple iPhone has been removed due to a potential copyright issue.
In a blog post, Grooveshark said:
Earlier this afternoon, Apple sent us a letter notifying us that, due to a complaint they received from Universal Music Group UK, Grooveshark for iPhone has been, strangely, pulled from the App Store.
This comes as an absolute surprise to us, and we are not sleeping until we figure out exactly how to fix this—and get Grooveshark for iPhone back in the App Store. Above all, our biggest concern is damaging the service we provide to all of you guys—our loyal (awesome) users.
If you’re unfamiliar with the service, Grooveshark provides streaming music to your computer or phone but the major difference between this and Pandora is that the free version lets you choose nearly any song you want to play, even with the free version. Users are able to upload their own songs, which are available to all users – this is probably where the issue came up because streaming those songs requires a licensing deal.
It’s kind of a shame that the Grooveshark Apple iPhone app was pulled but if there are legitimate copyright and licensing issues, then Apple had no choice in the matter. This isn’t an example of Apple being dictatorial with its App Store, this is just business as usual.
There are still plenty of apps to turn your Apple iPhone into a better multimedia device than it already is. The Rhapsody app is turning heads because you can stream millions of songs and the subscription service enables users to download tracks to listen to when there’s no data connection.
I was also pretty impressed with the Rdio app for the iPhone and Android, as it also enables streaming and offline music. Both services cost a bit too much for me to fully commit but it’s clear that these types of music services will greatly add to your mobile experience.

Those of you who own an iPhone 3G or an iPod Touch 2G (non-MC model) can jailbreak/unlock iOS 4.0.2. To jailbreak your iPhone 3G 4.0.2, you will have to use RedSn0w 0.9.5b5-5.
How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4.0.2
Step 1: Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed (iTunes 9.2).
Step 2: Download iOS 4 (not iOS 4.0.2) for iPhone 3G to your desktop from our iPhone downloads section.
Step 3: Update your iPhone to iOS 4.0.2 via iTunes.
Step 4: Download the latest version of RedSn0w from here.
Step 5: Point RedSn0w to the iOS 4 (not 4.0.2) you downloaded in step 2.
Step 6: Select “Install Cydia”.
Step 7: Follow the onscreen instructions.
Step 8: Let RedSn0w do the hard work for you. Once jailbroken, your iPhone will reboot.
How to Unlock iPhone 3G iOS 4.0.2
Since iOS 4.0.2 didn’t update the iPhone baseband, you can still use UltraSn0w to unlock your iPhone.
Step 1: Jailbreak your iPhone using the method described above.
Step 2: Go to Cydia and search for UltraSn0w. If it’s not there, you might have to add the following repo: repo666.ultrasn0w.com
Step 3: Install UltraSn0w.
Step 4: Reboot your iPhone.
Tell us how it goes for you by leaving a comment below.

The iPhone 4 antenna issue claimed another victim, and a big one! Apple’s Senior Vice President of iPhone Hardware Engineering Mark Papermaster isn’t on the payroll anymore. The NY Times article that broke the story doesn’t know if he was fired or if he resigned.
However, according to John Gruber, Papermaster did get fired over the antennagate:
From what I’ve heard, it’s clear he was canned. Papermaster was a conspicuous absence at the Antennagate press conference. Inside Apple, he’s “the guy responsible for the antenna” — that’s a quote from a source back on July 23. (Another quote from the same source: “Apparently the antenna guys used to have a big chip on their shoulder. No more.”)
I’m a bit confused here. According to Apple, there is no antenna problem with the iPhone 4, so why did Mark Papermaster got ousted? Sarcasm apart, someone had to take the heat for this.

FaceTime accounts are currently tied to iPhone 4 phone numbers but new reports on iOS 4.1 beta 3 show the option to initiate a FaceTime video call via email address as well.
We’ve already seen rumors that FaceTime would be tied into Apple or iTunes IDs, and if Apple does indeed plan to roll out the service to future iPod touch and iPad devices with front-facing cameras but without phone numbers, it’s a logical and necessary step.
Why Apple didn’t use email as the basis for iPhone 4 FaceTime to start with is anyone’s guess but the idea of an Apple supported VoIP system for both video and audio (hit the home button to exit the video but keep the call going), that’s standards based and released as an open standard, is certainly interesting. If every iPod touch 4 and iPad 2 supports it, and other apps and devices running Android, webOS, etc. pick it up, it could be even more interesting.
Until/unless it supports SkypeIn/SkypeOut-like ability to call people on regular old phones it won’t be a threat to traditional telephony, but it could be a strong contender to the future.
I’m already using FaceTime whenever possible. I’d like to use it more. Opening it up to connections based on email is the first step.
Hopefully we’ll learn more at Apple’s traditional fall iPod and iTunes event, where iOS 4.1 is widely expected to debut.

Apple has added a Genius tab to the iPad version of the App Store. Tap the tab, agree to the terms of service, and Apple will upload an (anonymized) list of all your apps and games, compare them to lists of millions of other (also anonymized) users, and recommend other apps and games you may be interested in.
So if the what’s new and what’s hot sections just don’t strike your fancy, if the top selling, grossing, and free stuff has lost its charm, if the categories are just impossible to sort through, give the Genius tab a try.
Then come back here and let me know just how smart the newly enabled iPad Genius was for you.
(My results so far: it recommended Fruit Ninja based on Angry Birds, Tetris based on Flight Control, iTeleport based on Brushes, Osfooha based on Twitterrific — which is interesting because I already own all of those I just don’t have them installed currently).

Booyah’s location-based check-in game, MyTown, is now available in Australian, UK, and Canadian iTunes stores. Woo! This is one I’ve actually been waiting for for awhile. Basically, it adds a thick slather of game elements on top of the usual location-based check-ins you might be familiar with in Foursquare and Gowalla. Essentially, it turns that same “go to a store, check in, get points” scheme into a game of Monopoly, that has you “owning” the businesses you check into, and charging rent to other people who check in there. MyTown also differs in that it lists stores specifically, while Foursquare and Gowalla are more loose, and offer a whole variety of user-generated content.
Conveniently enough, Booyah also launched a scavenger hunt today too. Basically, you check in to locations as much as possible to earn parts of a map, that will lead you to a hidden key somewhere in your city. Getting this key will give you a code that you e-mail to Booyah, which enters you in a chance to win iTunes gift cards or even an iPad. Unfortunately for those new international users, the contest is for Americans only. Bah.
Anyway, get downloading at the iTunes link below. The game’s free, and pretty fun. Sure hope it comes to Android and BlackBerry at some point.

The latest iOS 4 beta 3 has revealed that FaceTime will now be available via e-mail instead of just within phone calls or from a contact’s phone number within the contacts list. As you can see in the image above, an e-mail option pops up along with the phone number option in the Contacts application to initiate FaceTime calls. This could mean that FaceTime might becoming to future iOS devices that are equipped with a front-facing camera. A new iPod touch or iPad, perhaps?
Macrumors reports:
Apple is widely believed to be preparing to add at least a FaceTime-compatible front-facing camera to the next-generation iPod touch, rumored for introduction next month. Several photos of claimed next-generation iPod touch parts have surfaced showing a hole in the front LCD/digitizer assembly appropriate for a front-facing camera. Apple’s iPad has also been the subject of speculation regarding a front-facing camera, although no substantial evidence of such hardware has yet surfaced and a timetable for a refresh of the device remains unknown.
Now if only Apple would allow FaceTime calls over 3G without having us jailbreak our devices and download third-party apps, this would be even better.

Apple generally holds an iPod and iTunes event, where they announce the new iPod family, every September. However, the rumors are pointing towards a mid-August event this year instead.
The MacMagazine today received information from a reliable source within Apple about a new event to the press that the company was planning to soon. Although the schedule cite the source as somewhere around 14 and 16, we bet our chips on a Monday or Tuesday – that is, 16 or August 17.
We’ve already seen evidence of a new iPod touch with a front facing camera for FaceTime and a new rear camera with flash. In addition to these expectations, the source claims that Apple will deliver information about iOS 4 for the iPad as well as release iLife ‘11.
Apple has never discussed iLife during their fall iPod event, so why would they this year? Perhaps they will introduce a new music application to the suite that integrates with the iPod and iOS 4.
What do you think? Will we actually see an event in just a matter of weeks and what will be discussed? Sound off in the comments below!

Telus has just released an iPhone app that lets you remotely schedule, record, and review TV shows if you happen to be a Telus Optik TV subscriber. You can also search through the program guide using the app, which is probably way more user-friendly than chugging through menus on your TV.
Some of the big features include HD video on-demand, pay-per-view, call display, and picture-in-picture browsing. The added ability to use your Xbox 360 as the set-top box is just the icing on the cake. Rogers’ mobile TV app is more about streaming video to the device, but the content is all pretty well set in stone. Optik sounds like a pretty solid digital TV service, though I don’t subscribe to any kind of cable myself – you lovely internet gremlins are all the entertainment I need.
It’s only on iPhone and iPod touch for now, but a BlackBerry app is on the way, and Android is not too far behind. Download link to the free app in iTunes is below.

Apple recently introduced a new category in the App Store called “Try Before You Buy”. This category brings together the free or “lite” versions of popular iPhone applications. If this is a move to put an end to app piracy, then it’s a big fail!
As a point of comparison, the Android Market let’s you use the full version of an app for 24 hours. If you don’t like the app, you just get your money back. I don’t understand why Apple doesn’t implement such a policy in the Apple Store.
Personally, I want to try the full app, not a watered down version of it. While Apple made a step in the right direction, I think it’s still not enough.
What do you think?

Look out Research In Motion because the Apple iPhone and Google Android are gaining traction in the enterprise market, according to data from Good Technology.
In a release, the company said ever since it started supporting iOS and Android, businesses have been eager to let employees use these devices. In the first half of the year, Good deployed 1,500 solutions in businesses to support these products. The company said 43% of all its deployments now includes an Apple iPhone or Google Android device.
“More than ever, consumers are strongly influencing IT decision makers based on their personal mobility choices,” Brian Bogosian, chief executive of Good Technology, in a prepared statement. “Devices like the iPhone and the many Android phones now available are highly capable in both business and personal spheres and IT’s need for a cross-platform solution for mobility security and management is greater than ever.”
This is just another sign that RIM may have a stiff challenge on its hands with the enterprise market, as the European Commission also recently passed on the BlackBerry in favor of the Apple iPhone and HTC Google Android devices. Combine that with the potential bans on BlackBerry units and things could be bleak for RIM.
Of course, people have been saying that RIM is ripe for the taking for years now and it continues to dominate the enterprise market due to its security and integrated services. In fact, the bans in certain counties may be because the BlackBerry service to too secure and won’t allow certain regimes to monitor and spy on its citizens.
End users are definitely going to spur the adoption of enterprise Apple iPhone and Google Android devices but that super-duper level of security means big businesses and governments will still crank away on BlackBerry. They may carry a spare iPhone around for fun, but I get the feeling BlackBerry will still be the work device of choice.

Today I want to post about an issue I recently had when trying to FaceTime with Tina. Everytime I tried to initiate a FaceTime call, I would get an error message saying “FaceTime Failed – Tina is not available for FaceTime“. What was strange with this issue is that she could initiate the FaceTime call and reach me, but I couldn’t.
So really I thought the problem was from me since I was the one not being able to reach her. This drove me nuts for days. I even went as far as restoring my iPhone, thinking it would fix the issue. It didn’t. The solution was in fact much simpler. Ironically, the issue didn’t even come from my iPhone, but from hers.
I found the fix somewhere deep inside Apple’s support pages. Apparently the problem arises if you ported an old number to your iPhone 4, or if you recently changed your number, which was the case for Tina’s phone.
According to Apple, some of the symptoms are:
- When you are calling someone on FaceTime, the number on their screen is not your number.
- People are unable to initiate a FaceTime call with you.
- After installing a new carrier settings update, FaceTime does not activate.
The fix is really simple:
- In Settings > Phone, turn FaceTime OFF and turn it back ON again
- Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings
- Done
Immediately after performing this on Tina’s phone I was able to initiate a FaceTime call with her.
Hopefully this will help other people stuck on this issue.
