Rogers just announced that they’re now selling the Motorola Flipout, an Android handset with a funky form factor, and the BlackBerry Curve 9300, which is little more than a 3G version of their 8520. Rogers joins Bell in offering the BlackBerry 9300, which has Wi-Fi, GPS, a QVGA screen, optical trackpad, and 256 MB of RAM, while the Motorola Flipout is a first for North America. It was announced back in June, and will come with Android 2.1, enhanced Motoblur with resizaeable widgets, 2.8″ QVGA display, Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G, and a 3 megapixel camera.
I’m still hella unimpressed with the BlackBerry 9300, but on Rogers it at least sort of makes sense, since unlike Bell, they never had the 8530 for 3G access in a cheap BlackBerry. The Flipout’s design is certainly eye-catching, but perhaps a little too kooky for some people. The form factor’s been played with by Nokia before, which I don’t think did so well. Maybe Android will get people to deal with the unconventional twisty style.
You can pick up the Motorola Flipout for $29.99 on a three year contract ($374.99 without), and BlackBerry Curve 9300 for $79.99 on contract ($399.99 off).

Did you jailbreak your iPhone 4 the other day through JailbreakMe.com and are now waiting to unlock your shiny new Apple phone from carrier lockdown? Well, today is your day – The Team has released their updated ultrasn0w unlock utility through the Cydia jailbreak app store, allowing any jailbroken iPhone 4 to be carrier unlocked.
Why would you want to unlock your iPhone using ultrasn0w? Well, first of all, there’s the whole “stick it to the man” appeal of freeing your handset from being locked to a single GSM carrier (AT&T in the US). Secondly, you can use an unlocked iPhone 4 darn near anywhere in the world by popping in a local carrier’s SIM card and booting up the handset. That’s the kind of freedom this country was built upon, but has unfortunately been reeled in by the likes of Apple and AT&T. Even if you’re not a globe-trotter, it’s just nice to know that you have to option to unlock the iPhour and use it in any way you see fit.
Now, before you can unlock your iPhone 4, you’ll have to jailbreak the device. To do that, simply go to JailbreakMe.com on your phone, as we describe here.
Then, you’ll fire up Cydia (it’s automatically installed by JailbreakMe.com) and search for “ultrasn0w” – keep in mind that ultrasn0w is spelled with the number zero. Install the ultrasn0w app and let it do it’s thing. In less than two shakes of a Jobs’ tail, you will have a carrier unlocked iPhone 4 that’s free to connect to any GSM wireless network in the world. Have fun!
Now, before you go to jailbreak your little Apple phone, keep in mind that anytime you muck around with low-level code, you run the risk of turning your expensive glass-and-steel handset into an expensive glass-and-steel brick. We’ll take no responsibility for any mishaps, no matter how much you whine about it. That said, good luck. Happy jailbreak and unlock day!

All three major Canadian carriers have confirmed with me that they will be offering the BlackBerry Torch 9800 which was announced today on AT&T. No details on pricing or specific dates, but Rogers says it’ll be here in “the coming weeks”, while Telus will only say it’ll be here sometime this year, and Bell was the most specific, saying it’ll arrive this fall. Bell will definitely be picking it up through its little brother, Virgin Mobile. Odds are good that the three launches will happen relatively close to one another. Also, it seems likely that they’ll match AT&T’s $199 price point only, y’know, on a three-year plan instead of two.
The BlackBerry 9800 is RIM’s next generation handset with all-new hardware and software. It’s got an HVGA touchscreen that skips SurePress, a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, Wi-Fi b/g/n that allows wireless music syncing, HSPA 3G capable of world roaming, and GPS juiced-up by some new APIs.
Take a look at our breakdown of BlackBerry 6 to see most of the new features, or our pre-announcement analysis to understand why the 9800 is such a big deal for RIM.

This official Blackberry Price and Release Date from AT&T- you will get this new device for $199.99 after rebates on August 12, 2010. Given the shortage of Blackberry Storm when it was first launched November 2008, do expect the Blackberry Torch 9800 to run out of stock shortly after the release date. The $199.99 Blackberry Torch price is in line with smartphones like iPhone and other Android devices. It’s the first Blackberry with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard (didn’t Palm introduce this a long time ago with Palm Pre?) I am not quite impressed with all the specs. But for those who want to stick with Blackberry and want a touch screen phone, this is the one for you. Check back on 8/12 for much lower online exclusive price here.
Motorola says the City of San Francisco has selected it to build a Long Term Evolution network in the 700MHz band. It will be used for the municipality’s public safety agencies.
As part of the Bay Area Regional Interoperable Communications System (pdf) plan, the system will serve multiple agencies across the greater bay area, including San Francisco, Alameda County/Oakland, Contra Costa County, as well as the cities of Santa Clara and Sunnyvale.
This broadband system provides an overlay to the existing Project 25 standards based IP cores and networks and will cost upwards of $600 million.
The region has invested $106 million to date, including funds available through the Department of Commerce, Public Safety Interoperable Communications Grants, Homeland Security (UASI) Grants and local matching funds using “free” money provided by taxpayers.
The Public Safety LTE system will be installed this year and is expected to be operational in early 2011.
This first phase includes an LTE core, 10 sites and 330 Motorola Public Safety LTE user modems to provide Bay Area responders access to a host of media rich applications delivered over the new broadband network.
“This agreement represents a first step in realizing the BayRICS vision for a unified, state-of-the-art, mission critical voice and broadband multimedia network,” said Laura Phillips, general manager of the Bay Area UASI.
“Combining a Public Safety hardened LTE overlay network with our Project 25 voice and data networks, we have the opportunity to equip our first responders with the advanced communications tools they need to better protect themselves and our communities.”
“Project Cornerstone and the Bay Area BayWEB system will be the first deployment of Long Term Evolution (LTE) Public Safety Broadband in the nation. This is one of the most, if not the greatest, technological advancements in my thirty year law enforcement career,” said Sheriff Gregory J. Ahern, Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.
Motorola says its Next Generation Public Safety solutions combine advanced technological capabilities with mission critical solutions. Motorola believes public safety requires more than just a broadband pipe.
Motorola, of course, is working with APCO and other public safety organizations, including Verizon and AT&T in order to kill the FCC’s plan to auction the “D Block”.
Verizon Wireless and AT&T, both with 700 MHz spectrum from 2008 auctions, want to see the D Block go to public safety. So does Motorola, which dominates the market for first responder communications equipment and handsets. T-Mobile USA and Sprint Nextel Corp., eager for more spectrum, support the FCC proposal.
The FCC’s plan — supported by the co-chairs of the 9/11 Commission — “will ensure the build-out of a network that is cutting edge, reliable, and cost-effective,” FCC spokesman Rob Kenny said. It would auction off the 10 MHz “D Block”, but allow public service agencies to use the commercial frequencies. The FCC says it lowers cost and increases broadband penetration for everyone.
Public safety users currently use 800 MHz for most voice traffic, and recently were given the equivalent of four television channels (roughly Ch 63 & 64 and Ch 68 &69) in the 700 MHz band. Half those frequencies will be used for narrowband voice, the other half for broadband (LTE). Public service users were also given 10 MHz through an agreement by Nextel & the FCC. Nextel relinquished their interfering channels for new spectrum at 1.9 GHz.
Now Public Safety wants more spectrum. In the 2008 spectrum auction, the 10 MHz “D Block” (758–763 and 788–793 MHz), didn’t get the minimum bid of $1.3 billion (pdf).
The FCC’s first responder radio plan puts the cost of building the public safety network at roughly $6.5 billion and the cost of operating and maintaining it at between $6 billion and $10 billion over 10 years – less than half the cost of a stand-alone network, the FCC says. Commercial operators would build the network, but the spectrum would be governed by the Public Safety Spectrum Trust – and first responders could use it on a priority basis.
Public safety organizations [understandably] want it all to themselves. The problem for public safety is finding money to build a nationwide network with nearly 100% coverage. That could cost $16 billion and take away spectrum from the taxpayers who are footing the bill. The 9/11 Commission head believes the FCC’s approach serves the public better.
Serving the public may – or may not – have anything to do with it.

There have been a number of reports and rumors that HP will dump Windows 7 Tablet project. In my opinion, this is a better strategic move from HP. Why would you create two products to compete with each other. Would Apple create an iPhone and Android phone at the same time so that you have more choices when it comes to smartphones? Why not make a product that can change the world rather than a product that so few people are interested in. We already have tablets running on Windows. Who needs more Windows tablets.
Well, even if HP doesn’t kill the HP Slate, we will definitely see a new tablet powered by Palm WebOS before Christmas this year. But what can you expect from HP WebOS Tablet? Everything you find on the Palm Pre Plus can be easily brought to a large touch screen. And it’s not going to be called a tablet. I don’t think HP want this new product to be associated with those clumsy tablets that are not sexy. The only competitor in the large touchscreen mobile device is Apple’s iPad. So, whatever the iPad doesn’t have, HP want to have them on the new WebOS device. Just to give you a few - digital camera, support for Flash. So, what do you expect the new WebOS touchscreen device will have? Leave us a comment below. Thanks.
600,000 iPhone 4 were preordered during the first day and nearly crashed AT&T and Apple’s system. I have no doubt that Appple is on track to sell 1 millions of iPhone 4 during today’s official launch. Will iPhone 4 replace your Palm Pre, Palm Pre Plus, and Palm Pixi Plus? A couple of readers responded to why you should switch from Palm Pre to iPhone 4. Are you still waiting for Palm Pre 2? What will Palm Pre 2 include? Double the screen resolution? Double memory capacity? What else can Palm and HP do the fend off competition from Apple and Google. I am pretty sure that HP and Palm will definitely come up with something extraordinary before Christmas. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
Is HTC EVO 4G in stock (retail or online stores)? Nope, no wonder it’s the number one Sprint phone this year. Sure, Palm Pre had its share of spotlight during CTIA 2009, but the HTC EVO generated even more buzz in 2010. From my personal visits to a number of Sprint retail and online stores, HTC Evo already ran out of stock in the first 2 days. Some online authorized dealers aren’t even allowed to sell it during the first 1 months.
Although 4G is only available in selected metro areas, Sprint has sold more HTC EVO 4G than any other Sprint product launch in the past. With more 4G coverage coming soon this year, I am sure the EVO will be super hot this summer. If you find the EVO 4G in stock during your visit to local stores, get them right away! Good luck.
What’s the number one Sprint phone right now? To answer this question, just go to any Sprint retail store and ask what phone have sold out since last Friday? The HTC Evo it is. The EVO 4G has taken the number one spot on Sprint’s top selling phones this year. This happened only a few days after the official launch. Can you imagine if they have more units in stock? People are comparing the EVO 4G with iPhone 4. In fact, very few people mentioned any trouble of choosing Palm Pre or HTC EVO. We have to admit that Palm Pre is no competition to the Evo. Let’s just hope that HP can come up something more amazing later this year (chances are they will release something before Christmas shopping season).

I just posted a few reasons why you should upgrade to HTC Evo 4G. What about switching from Palm Pre Plus to iPhone 4. The new iPhone looks like having so much more than Palm Pre Plus has to offer. 1GHZ vs. 600mhz processor speed, 960 x 640 vs. 480 x 320 screen resolution, 5 megapixel camera vs. 3 megapixel, and 720p videos at 30fps vs. VGA at 30fps. Plus there are so many more apps for iPhone than for Palm Pre. What’s keeping you from upgrading to iPhone 4 from Palm Pre Plus - carrier/network, price, or features?
We already know Palm Pre is not 4G ready, so why not upgrade to HTC Evo 4G now for a great price? Every spec on Evo is more favorable than that from Palm Pre. The only thing some of the long time Palm users might be concerned is the lack of physical keyboard - but trust me, you don’t need one after you play with Evo for a day or two. The absence of physical keyboard actually is a big advantage - the phone is lighter and slimmer. We have HTC Evo for sale now for $189.99. For a limited time, this price is good for new account, upgrade, or add-a-line. Price is cheaper than what the retail stores offer plus you don’t need to file a rebate claim at all. Upgrade to HTC Evo today and save more money!

There’s no doubt that when Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) drops the iPhone 4G / HD / 4 on the world during the WWDC 2010 keynote next week, smartphone hopefuls will be lining up to buy the next-gen iPhone and its higher-resolution display. Today, we have confirmation that the iPhone 4 will sport an IPS-based LCD screen (the same kind that is used on the iPad) that packs in 960 x 640 pixels for a pixel density (DPI) that has yet to be achieved on any other smartphone. By taking count of the RGB elements of the new iPhone display under a microscope, we now know that the upcoming Apple smartphone has twice the number of pixels in both the vertical and horizontal directions.
Just how does one figure out the pixel count of an LCD panel? Well, you literally put the display under a microscope and count the number of pixels (each pixel is comprised of three sub-pixels – RGB for red, green and blue). Then you do some quick math to extrapolate how many pixels are present in a given length of the display. That’s exactly what Czech site superiphone.cz. These folks apparently got their iPhone-loving mitts on the next-gen iPhone display (or at least some components) and put it to the test.
After examining and counting the RGB elements, they found the density in both horizontal and vertical directions to be TWICE what we’re used to. Translation? We’re looking at quadruple the total number of pixels, giving us the rumored 960×640 IPS display at 320dpi. Insane. That makes the iPhone 4 the first smartphone to launch with a pixel density this high. The higher density should give the Apple phone’s display the kind of clarity that we’ve not yet seen in the mobile space, with almost HD-quality resolution.
That’s a lot of pixels. If this is indeed true… I want one. Now.

Now.
